About MedCamps

Our History

MedCamps began in 1971 when Dr. Kelsy Caplinger III partnered with Camp Aldersgate in Little Rock, Arkansas, to create a unique camp experience for children with chronic medical conditions. That first summer, Dr. Caplinger organized a one-week pilot program that served just 12 children.

As interest and participation grew, Dr. Gene France joined the effort in 1977. Together, these visionary physicians expanded the program, and by 1979 MedCamps was providing eight weeks of camp experiences for 233 children with a wide range of medical conditions.

On May 19, 1980, Medical Camps of Arkansas, Inc. was officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, ensuring the long-term sustainability of this important mission.

Although we lost Dr. Caplinger in 2020 and Dr. France in 2023, their vision continues to inspire our work. Today, MedCamps proudly carries forward their legacy by helping children and young adults across Arkansas enjoy safe, enriching camp experiences designed to meet their unique needs.

What We Do

MedCamps provides medical oversight for specialized camp programs held at Camp Aldersgate throughout the year. These programs serve children, teens, and young adults living with a variety of medical conditions, including:

  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Spinal cord disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Heart conditions
  • Juvenile arthritis
  • Kidney disorders
  • Cancer
  • Bleeding disorders
  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • Hearing impairments

Through the generosity of our donors and community supporters, MedCamps also helps offset camp expenses, making these life-changing experiences more accessible to Arkansas families.

Volunteer physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, many of whom are affiliated with Arkansas Children’s Hospital, provide essential medical support during camp sessions. Camp Aldersgate contributes its beautiful facility, experienced camp staff, and innovative program design, creating a partnership that allows campers to build confidence, independence, friendships, and lifelong memories in a safe and supportive environment.

Why It Matters

More than 50 years ago, Dr. Kelsy Caplinger III envisioned a camp experience where children with medical conditions could enjoy the same opportunities as their peers. Today, that vision continues through MedCamps.

By partnering with Camp Aldersgate, healthcare volunteers, and generous donors, MedCamps helps children and young adults build confidence, form lasting friendships, and create lifelong memories in a safe, supportive environment.

Together, we are ensuring that a diagnosis never defines a child’s opportunities and that every camper has the chance to belong, grow, and thrive.

Making memories. Building confidence. Creating opportunities. One camper at a time.
